Stirrups are smaller diameter steel bars that are arranged transversely around the main bars to form a reinforcement cage. Their function is to prevent buckling of the longitudinal bars and to transfer shear forces. Stirrups are installed at regular intervals, and a denser distribution of stirrups is used in the support regions of beams and stringers, where the highest shear forces occur.

The main bars and stirrups are connected using
tie wire, which holds the entire reinforcement structure in place. This wire should be firmly clamped so that the reinforcement does not move during concreting.
