The number of vertical bars and their diameter depends on the requirements of the project, but as a standard they are distributed evenly around the perimeter of the column. They often extend beyond the length of the formwork to connect to further structural elements, such as foundations or subsequent floors.

Installation of transverse reinforcement

Once the vertical bars are fixed, stirrups, which are smaller diameter cross bars that surround the vertical bars to form a reinforcing cage, are installed. Stirrups are placed at regular intervals (usually every 20-30 cm) along the entire height of the column. The stirrups prevent buckling of the vertical bars and protect the column from damage caused by lateral forces.

Joining steel bars

The vertical bars and stirrups are connected by tie wire, which binds the entire structure together. The connections must be solid so that the reinforcement does not move when the concrete is poured. It is crucial that the entire reinforcement cage is stable and maintains its form when the concrete is poured. Therefore, all connections must be carefully checked.
